Behind the Scenes: Bringing George Eliot to the Stage

With playwright Cathy Tempelsman, author of the World Premiere Play A Most Dangerous Woman, based on the life of the writer George Eliot.

Wednesday, September 11th – 2:00pm

Madison Public Library

39 Keep St. – Madison, NJ

Join us for an informative discussion with Cathy Tempelsman, who will talk about her experience writing A Most Dangerous Woman, which will be presented by The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (September 18-October 12).

Initially drawn to Eliot’s writing, Tempelsman then became fascinated by the writer’s extraordinary, unconventional life. But she found that biographies told only half the story. Eliot’s letters and journals revealed a much more passionate, complicated figure, and an even more startling set of choices. This is the George Eliot she set out to capture in A Most Dangerous Woman.

Tempelsman will also discuss the challenge of translating her research into a dramatic portrayal of a remarkable, scandalous life; feminist criticism of George Eliot; and her experiences working with Tony Award-winning director Richard Maltby, Jr.  The program will conclude with a Q&A session.
