Sidewalk Gallery Welcome to the Madison Sidewalk Gallery! A very talented group of New Jersey Artists is participating in a creative new public art exhibition: DDC/MACA Sidewalk Gallery. The exhibit, which officially launched on Saturday, May 4, features large, colorful art banners installed in and around downtown Madison. In October, you will have the opportunity to purchase one of these works of art for yourself at our Sidewalk Gallery Auction (click link for details)! The Madison Sidewalk Gallery is a collaborative project between the Madison Arts & Culture Alliance (MACA) and the Downtown Development Commission (DDC). It is designed to help promote the creative work of local artists, and to recognize Madison as a premier arts destination. This exciting new public art project is the first of many new collaborations for Madison and does many things for both the artists and the community including engaging civic dialogue, providing an economic benefit, connecting artists with communities and enhancing public appreciation of art.

The eight selected artists have created original works of art on 30” x 40” canvas banners that will be displayed on specially designed lampposts installed in key locations in downtown Madison. These art banners will add color, depth, and life to the streets and will remain on exhibit through the fall. At that time, the banners will be removed, and will be prepped for public auction—affording the general public an opportunity to purchase and own one of these original works of art. The Gala Auction event is scheduled for October 18 at the Madison Hartley Dodge Memorial. The event will include refreshments, music, a meet-the-artist reception and a chance to purchase your favorite pieces of original artwork by some of New Jersey’s most sought after artists at auction. More details about the gala will be posted on this website shortly. Another facet to the project is the plan to open and staff a pop up gallery in downtown Madison utilizing a vacant storefront for a short period of time. Each of the artists featured in the Madison Sidewalk Gallery banner show will be able exhibit and sell their other original works in the gallery space. Yet another opportunity to bring art into the downtown, attract more foot traffic and provide a venue for artists and their works. The Downtown Development Commission (DDC) was initiated by Mayor Elizabeth Baumgartner and the Borough Council in October of 1981, following a study by Projects for Public Space, funded through a Dodge Foundation Grant. The DDC is focused on coordinating redevelopment activities in the downtown district to foster a closer working relationship between all segments of the Madison community. The group works closely with the Chamber of Commerce, Historic Preservation Commission, Madison Arts & Culture Alliance and other groups to enhance the beauty and ambiance of Madison’s shopping areas.
