Madison is a stop on the 37th Annual Black Maria Film Festival tour in the Chase Room of the Madison Public Library, 39 Keep Street, Madison, New Jersey 07940.  Tickets are $ 10 at the door ($5 for  students with valid ID).

The program features a collection of the Festival’s award-winning short films including animation, narrative, experimental and documentary. Festival director Jane Steuerwald will present the program in person, and host a Q & A with the audience.

The Black Maria Film Festival has generous support from New Jersey City University, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the Hudson County Office of Cultural Affairs and Tourism.  The Festival showcases the works of highly accomplished independent filmmakers and is a project of the Thomas A. Edison Media Arts Consortium, an independent non-profit organization in residence at NJ City University’s Department of Media Arts.

The festival was founded in 1981 as a tribute to Thomas Edison’s development of the motion picture at his laboratory, dubbed the “Black Maria” film studio, the first in the world, in West Orange, NJ. The Black Maria Film Festival has been awarded the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Citation for Excellence for eight consecutive years. Each program on the tour is custom curated so if you go to one, the next one may be a completely different selection of films.
