Madison, NJ Artistic Director Wins Playwriting Fellowship Writers Theatre of New Jersey Artistic Director John Pietrowski was awarded his second New Jersey Individual Artist Fellowship by the New Jersey State Council on the arts on Tuesday, February 13th for his latest play, POLAROIDS BEFORE THE FALL. The Individual Artist Fellowships are competitive awards to New Jersey artists in 12 rotating disciplines granted solely on independent peer panel assessment of work samples. The anonymous process is focused on artistic quality, and awards may be used to help artists produce new work and advance their careers. New Jersey artists applied for awards this year in the categories of crafts, photography and playwriting. This program is carried out in partnership with the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. Eight playwrights received awards this year. “Whether it’s sculpture, poetry, or theater, New Jersey has long been a forerunner in the arts,” said Acting Secretary of State, Tahesha Way. “Our arts history is incredibly rich and its pages are thick with distinguished emissaries like William Carlos Williams and Alice Barber Stephens. I have full faith and confidence that our newest generations of artists, like those supported through this excellent program, will not disappoint.” “We are extremely proud of these artists and grateful for the chance help lift them up.” said Council Chair Elizabeth Mattson. “The Fellowship program is designed to make it just a little easier for artists of all kinds to focus on their work; to contribute to communities, families and individuals in immeasurable ways.” Mr. Pietrowski has been the Artistic Director of Writers Theatre of New Jersey for over thirty years. The mission of the theatre is to develop new work and encourage a spirit of creation in the community. In addition to his administrative duties, Mr. Pietrowski directs readings and mainstage shows at WTNJ, teaches adult playwriting classes, and assists professional playwrights in the development of new plays as they move through the process. This immersion in the craft has shown through in the outstanding quality of his work. “It’s very exhilarating and humbling to receive this fellowship,” said Pietrowski. “In my capacity as Artistic Director, I have worked with a number of the recipients developing their work, including Ben V. Marshall, who is receiving his fifth fellowship, as well as Deborah Brevoort, and Lia Romeo, who was our National New Play Network MFA Writer-in-Residence a number of years ago. New Jersey has a community of excellent playwrights; it’s good to see my friends recognized like this.” For more information on any of Writers Theatre’s programs, please visit www.wtnj.org or contact Writers Theatre at P.O.
